OSTEOPATHIC PRACTITIONERS

What skills does an Osteopath need to be a Membrain Health Practitioner?

  • A detailed knowledge of the cranial anatomy – bony, membranous and fluid

  • A basic understanding of the different areas of the brain

  • Quiet listening skills and an ability to pick up pulls, changes in shape and quality of the dural membrane system and an ability to palpate subtle motion at the level of the fluids and tissues as opposed to the gross motion of the musculoskeletal system.

  • To effect change in tissues using ‘Indirect Techniques’ (working with the tissues eg. Functional techniques, exaggeration and decompression techniques) as opposed to ‘Direct Techniques’ (confronting the tissues and pushing through barriers eg. HVT, cross fibre stretch etc.)

  • Share a common language based around the concept of Membrain Health – a language that can be used to communicate with other health professionals and patients to explain our rationale.  This language takes its origin from the Dimensional Model of Health (DMH) – a model of health and disease based around Biological Complexity.  The DMH  provides a modern day explanation for Osteopathy in its Intended Format and offers a language accessible to all.

We are collating a list of osteopathic practitioners worldwide who have a clear understanding and interest in the topic of Membrain Health and The Dimensional Model of Health.  It is one thing to be able to tell if a patient has Membrain Disorder but it equally important to know when they do not.  The DMH provides a context for our work and an understanding of how to refer on patients with mental health problems that do not suffer with Membrain Disorder.

An osteopath trained in the cranial field will have the technical skill  but what is also important to master is a particular way of thinking about what you as a practitioner are doing and why you are doing it and how you explain it.  An osteopathic profession helping patients who are struggling with their mental health, patients that are generally looked after by GPs, psychiatrists and talking therapists, needs to be able to communicate. As a collective the osteopaths need to be ‘singing from the same song-sheet’ to make this concept understood – world wide!

If you wish to add your name and details to the list of practitioners with a special interest and an understanding in the field of Membrain Health please complete the form at the end of this page - stroll down and you will find it. This list will be accessible to patients on this forum.

Undergraduate courses offered to students studying to be osteopaths

A group of osteopaths are in the process of developing a 40 hour contact course for undergraduate students. The idea is to coordinate this training with working with rugby teams and developing undergraduate research projects – vital to the progress in this field. It is necessary to get one or more of the undergraduate colleges interested in such a proposal.

Course Directors – Jo Wildy and Hannah Beard (founder of Hands on Heads)

Content - under development

Learning Outcomes - under development

Cost – TBD

Any college who has an interest please get in contact.

Osteopaths interested in this work but who have no cranial training (sports osteopaths encouraged!)

We are in the process of developing a similar 40 hour contact course
